Governor Carney signed a proclamation to declare January as Mentoring Month and included a proposal for a Statewide Mentoring Coordinator in his Fiscal Year 2024 Budget.
Landmark Science & Engineering believes mentors and role models can make a life-changing impact for youth in our state and our leadership and personnel support mentoring to help foster positive relationships for Delaware students on both the high school and collegiate levels. Landmark also participates in the Delaware Pathway Program helping students develop the academic, technical and employability skills, and to gain the real world experience needed for successful, in-demand jobs.
Our company president, Ted Williams, P.E., had the honor of being welcomed as Principal for a Day at Glasgow High School. He toured the school and inspired students interested in pursuing degrees and careers in STEM. Mr. Williams emphasized the crucial role of math and science and shared his personal journey, filled with valuable insights.
Dakota Laidman-Murray P.E., participated in the 2024 Engineering New Castle County (NCC) Career Fair which offers a unique opportunity for industry leaders to connect with aspiring engineering professionals through mentoring and networking and share valuable insights and guidance to help shape the future workforce in STEM fields. Landmark’s participation enables our firm to engage with students in engineering pathways across NCC districts involved in Project Lead the Way. The goal is to expose students to various specialties within the industry, allowing them to ask questions, network, and establish relationships with potential mentors for their capstone projects. Project Lead the Way Capstone projects require students to partner with an industry mentor who can provide insights through a minimum of six interactions throughout the project development process. Students tackle real-world problems, conducting market research, developing CAD designs, creating prototypes, and engaging in trial-and-error testing—all with the support of mentorship.
Joe Marvasi. P.E., teaches as an adjunct professor at Delaware Technical Community College. His course load includes but is not limited to:
-Civil Engineering Drafting and Design that focuses on drawing and design challenges in civil and environmental engineering, covering topics like site analysis, grading, drainage, utility layout, erosion control, and sustainable design. Students create a conceptual commercial site design and develop components of a detailed drawing set.
-Principles of Site Development that introduces the fundamental concepts of site and subdivision planning, including zoning, ordinances, and government regulations of New Castle County, Delaware. Students engage in site design projects, creating preliminary construction drawings for a conceptual subdivision while collaborating with related disciplines to simulate real-world industry practices.
–Civil CAD Applications that focuses on advanced computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) techniques used in civil engineering. It covers topics like topographic analysis, residential and street layouts, utility design, grading, and structural applications, providing students with practical skills in civil CADD site modeling and surveying.
-Hydrology, which covers the fundamental principles of hydraulics applied to designing pipe distribution systems. It explores topics such as pump sizing and selection, open channel flow, hydraulic structures, hydrology, rainfall-runoff analysis, drainage design, and flood flow analysis.
–Mathematical Reasonings Using Functions, Parts I and II, a two-course sequential course designed to prepare students for Calculus and STEM studies. It provides an in-depth exploration of linear, polynomial, rational, radical, exponential, and logarithmic functions in a contextualized framework.
In short, Landmark employees are very involved in our community and education about and within our industry. Their dedication to giving back and sharing their knowledge is just one more example of Landmark’s remarkable contributions to the State of Delaware.
